Sobering news reach the world from Türkiye and Syria as the level of damage, destruction and devastation in the region around Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Gaziantep, Malatya and North Syria, Aleppo becomes apparent. The number of injured and death people increases by the hour. Rescue teams do what they can to free people from the rubble.
The CDI & CES research teams at KAUST compile a broad range of geophysical data and conduct preliminary analyses. Preliminary back-projection results for the initial M 7.8 event, using teleseismic data from Alaska, indicate a large-scale bilateral rupture, with potential local complexity as the rupture transitions from a small fault strand parallel to the EAFZ onto the main EAF.
